Satirical posters targeting Golam Azam appeared across different points of the Chittagong University campus on Monday morning, prompting concern from university authorities. The posters showed his image stamped with shoeprints alongside the message “Hit Me With Shoes.” The administration described the incident as a deliberate attempt to disturb the campus environment.
University Proctor Dr. Hossain Shaid Shohrowardhy condemned the act, attributing it to unknown individuals seeking to stir unrest. He confirmed that necessary steps had been taken to maintain peace and that all student organizations had been urged to avoid any provocative actions.
The general secretary of the university’s Islami Chatra Shibir unit said the incident appeared designed to create tension between student groups. He stated that since the matter surrounding Golam Azam had already been settled through legal channels, his organization would not be swayed by such acts.
In contrast, Ayobur Rahman Tawfick, assistant general secretary of the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) and joint general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chatra Dal, viewed the episode as an expression of personal sentiment rather than organized political activity. He described Golam Azam as a controversial figure and cautioned against reading too much into the incident.
CUCSU General Secretary Sayed Bin Habib also took a measured stance, noting that the campus naturally hosts a range of political opinions and that students retain the right to voice their views.
As of now, university authorities have not identified anyone responsible for putting up the posters.
