Proctorial team, police intervene to control situation; both sides to meet at proctor office tomorrow

A minor scuffle during the inter-university football tournament final at Chittagong University escalated into a four-hour standoff between students of the 2020-21 and 2022-23 academic sessions on Sunday.

The trouble began when a master’s student serving as a volunteer at the central playground got into a physical altercation with a junior student. Although the incident stopped immediately, both sides later gathered at separate locations. One group near the police outpost adjacent to Amanat Hall and the other near the central playground.

Leaders of the university branch of Chhatra Dal arrived at the scene. However, no CUCSU leaders were found present throughout the standoff despite nearly four hours passing.

CUCSU General Secretary Sayed Bin Habib said, “We informed the proctor from the very beginning and remained sufficiently engaged. Both the VP and I were unable to be present as we were attending a meeting. What started as a trivial incident very likely turned into a matter of political involvement.”

Assistant General Secretary Ayobur Rahman Tawfick said, “There was a senior-junior conflict here. Their familiar seniors were present and mediated in their own way. The proctor also came and brought the situation under control. I am currently at Amanat Hall. None of us want this kind of unwanted situation.”

Assistant Proctor Nurul Hamid Kanon said the proctorial team went to the scene upon receiving the news and tried to control the situation. Junior students were first asked to leave. Later, contact was made with senior students to resolve the matter mutually.

“While discussions were ongoing, the two sides faced off again, leading to a heated exchange of words. However, the situation did not escalate into a physical clash. The proctorial team, security personnel and police then came to the scene and brought the situation under control,” he said.

He added that the matter has not yet been fully resolved. “Tomorrow, both sides will be called to the proctor’s office to review the incident. Based on the level of responsibility of each party, action will be taken according to university regulations for breach of discipline,” he said.

The assistant proctor also said the 2022-23 batch students acknowledged their fault collectively and expressed willingness to apologize to their seniors. This message has been conveyed to the senior students as well.

“The university currently maintains a stable academic environment. Anyone who tries to disrupt this will face a zero tolerance policy — whether it is a student organisation or general students,” he said.

Students eventually dispersed from their respective positions after the situation was brought under control.
