The Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) has called on the university administration to fully air-condition the central library as part of the 2026–27 fiscal year budget.

The demand was raised at a press conference held Monday (May 18) at noon in front of the central library. The event was titled “Progress on the Central Library’s Overall Renovation and Air-Conditioning Initiative and the Way Forward.”

In his written statement, CUCSU General Secretary Sayed Bin Habib put forward three demands:
1. Full air-conditioning of the central library alongside the new budget approval.
2. Establishment of a city-based library for students living off-campus
3. Permission to use the Institute of Fine Arts as a temporary library until a permanent solution is in place.

CUCSU’s Secretary for Library and Cafeteria Affairs, Masum Billah, outlined a series of improvements made since assuming office. These include the launch of a dedicated reading corner, installation of a generator for uninterrupted power supply, a separate prayer room for female students and the creation of a large open study space beside the library. Additional improvements include new lighting and fans, increased seating, extended operating hours until 10 PM and the opening of a coffee shop.

Also present at the press conference were CUCSU’s Assistant Secretary for Female-Students’ Welfare Jannatul Ferdous Rita and executive members Sohan and Adnan Sharif.
