The Chittagong University (CU) authorities suspended all academic classes and examinations scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, due to continuous heavy rainfall and severe inclement weather across the region.
The decision was confirmed through an official emergency notice signed by the acting Registrar of the university, Professor Dr. Mohammad Saiful Islam, on Wednesday morning, which was later published on the university’s official social media platforms. According to the administrative circular, the suspension was implemented following directives from the university high command after reviewing the overall context of persistent foul weather, acute waterlogging, and the resulting crisis in public transportation.
The adverse weather conditions follow continuous, torrential downpours that began on Monday, causing severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas across the Chattogram metropolis. Floodwaters have entered numerous residential buildings, commercial establishments, and educational institutions, completely disrupting normal civic life.
The persistent waterlogging has also severely impacted the regional transportation infrastructure. On Tuesday morning, rail communications on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar route were temporarily suspended after floodwaters submerged the railway tracks. Authorities and weather experts express concerns that the public distress and infrastructural gridlock may persist until the weather conditions stabilize.
