Chittagong University (CU) authorities have taken disciplinary action against a teacher and two students in three separate incidents. One teacher has been suspended and two students expelled. In another case, a student who was earlier expelled permanently for assaulting an assistant proctor has had that punishment reduced to six months following a High Court order.
According to university sources, Dr. Mohammad Abdul Wahed Chowdhury, associate professor of the Department of Zoology, was suspended over a derogatory social media post about the July 2024 movement. The administration has formed a committee to investigate the matter further.
In a separate case, a clash broke out between Philosophy and History department students on August 9. During the dispute, Md. Wasim, a Philosophy student from the 2024-25 session, hit Mashrafi Munwar Mahi, a History student from the 2025-26 session, with a stick, breaking his hand. The university formed an investigation committee to look into the incident. The disciplinary committee recommended permanent expulsion for Wasim and a one-year expulsion for Tahsir Hasan, another History student. Based on that recommendation, the 568th syndicate meeting approved the expulsion orders.
In the third incident, Afsana Enayet Emi, a Law student, had earlier been expelled permanently and had her certificate cancelled for assaulting assistant proctor Dr. Korban Ali. The High Court later stayed that order and reduced her punishment to six months. University officials said the ruling has now taken effect, as the case had already run past its set time limit.
The decisions send a clear message that no one, whatever their political, social, or personal identity, can escape accountability for violence or wrongdoing on campus.
