150 youth collect 17.7kg of plastic in 2.5 hours at ‘Shuddhotar Chasabad 4.0’
A Chittagong University organisation turned plastic waste into books on Tuesday, collecting over 1,000 pieces of plastic weighing 17.7 kilograms in just 2.5 hours at Zero Point under an initiative titled “Shuddhotar Chasabad 4.0.”
Participants received one book for every five pieces of plastic they brought. Around 150 young people joined the event held on June 23.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dr Mohammad Al-Amin inaugurated the programme as chief guest. Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Md Shafikul Islam attended as special guest. Also present were CU Surjosen Hall Provost Prof Dr Syed Muhammad Shamsul Huda, Persian Language and Literature Lecturer Mizanur Rahman, Arabic Department Lecturer Md Omar Faruk, and Tahsina Rahman, social service and environment affairs secretary of CUCSU.
Organisation President Mukul Chandra Roy said, “Our initiative aims to raise awareness about not littering plastic waste.”
General Secretary said, “Students are interested in environment-friendly programmes, but what is lacking is initiative. Our small efforts will change the future. Let us prevent plastic pollution, strengthen plastic recycling, and gift our future generations pure soil, fresh water and clean air.”
The event demonstrated that young people are willing to act for the environment when given the right opportunity and platform to do so.
