Security concerns surged at Chittagong University (CU) after a fourth-year student was stabbed and seriously injured by unidentified miscreants inside the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences area last evening.
The incident occurred around 7:00 PM on Wednesday, though it only came to light around 10:00 PM when the university proctorial body arrived at the scene.
The victim, SM Faisal Hasan, a final-year forestry student, was sitting with his wife when he noticed two suspicious men loitering nearby. When Hasan confronted one of them, the suspect gave incoherent excuses about searching for lost cattle. Sensing danger, Hasan contacted local student representatives for backup. As the suspect suddenly attempted to flee, Hasan caught him, prompting the assailant to slash him repeatedly with a sharp weapon before escaping toward a nearby village.
Hasan was rushed to the university medical center with deep lacerations.
“The attacker targeted my neck, but I managed to block the blow with my hands,” Faisal recalled. “The assailant dropped a shoe while fleeing, which has been kept as evidence. I am meeting the proctorial body today to finalize our legal next steps.”
University physician Dr. Muhammad Tipu Sultan confirmed that the victim required stitches for a deep stab wound on his upper right arm, along with medical treatment for multiple cuts across his fingers.
The attack has sparked outrage among the student body regarding institutional negligence. Masterda Surja Sen Hall Council GS Md. Sadman Al-Tasin criticized the total breakdown of security infrastructure in the area.
“The spot is pitch black with no security guards, zero functional CCTV cameras, and no adequate lighting,” Sadman stated.”We have been demanding better security here for a long time. Today, we are formally demanding that the administration immediately arrest the attacker and secure the campus.”
Assistant Proctor Professor Md. Kamrul Hossain stated that initial findings suggest the attacker was an outsider.
“We are working to identify the suspect based on the victim’s statement,” Professor Hossain said. “While there are CCTV cameras near the site, many are currently non-functional. Repairs to fix the campus surveillance network have already begun.”
