CUCSU Assistant General Secretary (AGS) Ayobur Rahman Tawfick is organizing the “Shaheed Hridoy Chandra Tarua Futsal Tournament” on July 9 (Thursday). The tournament is being held to remember Hridoy Chandra Tarua, the first student from Chittagong University (CU) who lost his life during the July mass uprising of 2024.
The event will start at 10:00 AM on Thursday at Shahjalal Hall field. The hall carries many memories tied to the slain student. With the campus swept up in World Cup football right now, many are recalling him this month. Had Tarua, who gave his life for a discrimination-free Bangladesh, still been around, he might well have joined in the World Cup excitement himself.
Organizers said Tarua would probably have been following the World Cup with his friends, chatting and taking over the football field, had he lived. The absence of a person who sacrificed his life dreaming of a Bangladesh free from fascism is still felt today. The tournament at Shahjalal Hall is meant to pay tribute to his memory and sacrifice. Beyond being just a game, it is meant to carry his story of sacrifice forward to the newer generation and build stronger bonds between senior and junior students.
Toufiq will serve as the tournament’s chief patron. Mahmudur Rahman Tamim, Secretary for Social Welfare, Environment and Human Rights Affairs of the CUCSU Shahjalal Hall Students’ Council, is coordinating the event.
Speaking about the tournament, Tawfick said Tarua gave his life during the July-August uprising, and with football fever running high in the month of July, holding a football tournament felt fitting. He added that Shahjalal Hall carries Tarua’s memory, which is why it was picked as the venue, and that the tournament would strengthen bonds among junior batches while keeping the spirit of the uprising alive.
Students from the 2024-25 and 2025-26 academic years of the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) can take part. Each department can field two teams, one from each academic year, with ten players per team, six playing on the field and four kept as substitutes.
