Students demand buses for remote area voters

The Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) locked the main gate of Chittagong University on Tuesday evening, demanding transport facilities for students from remote areas to participate in elections.

The gate was locked at 5:00pm on January 10 with student participation showing solidarity with the cause.

CUCSU announced the gate would remain locked until the university administration provides buses for students.

CUCSU Executive Member Sohanur Rahman Sohan said the university administration is not providing buses for students from remote areas to participate in the election. “They are only giving a small amount of money to rent two train compartments. We managed money from outside and went around bus counters, but when we became helpless, we said we would pay whatever it costs. We just want the university buses to be used for students. But the administration is not even giving that,” he said.

He added, “Buses can go to various programmes and events because teachers want them, so they are given. Now students are asking for it, so it has no validity. The main gate will remain closed until buses are provided for students.”

Abrarul Haque, a student of the Philosophy Department from the 2020-21 session, said, “Even after CUCSU repeatedly went to the university administration, they are not giving buses. This is a clear anti-student position. Moreover, buses are not available outside either. Where small universities like KUET and NSTU have provided buses for their students, our administration is making fun of us.”
